Last August 2, in celebration of Maker Party Season, the Mozilla Philippines Community organized a Maker Party for Students from Metro Manila. The team introduced what the Webmaker Project, including the tools that they can use in learning and teaching the Web.
The event was held at the Globe Valero Showroom in Makati City and was attended by more than 20 students and young professionals from the Mozilla Philippines Community. It was an awesome event, full of fun activities on learning the Webmaker Project and showing them the Mozilla way of teaching the Web.
The event started with our Community Manager Faye Tandog giving a talk introducing the Mozilla Project. It was followed by a little activity, in which attendees roam around the room to introduce himself/herself; asking each other what is the Web for them. A discussion then followed about their ideas on what the Web is for them.
For the Maker Party proper, the first activity was to reflect on the “Making is Learning” idea: each attendee was asked to draw a badge that they deserved to receive. Facilitators picked three pairs to explain and give feedback to each other about the badge that they drew. We reflected on that activity and discussed that feedback is a great factor for us to improve on the things we love to make. We learn what should and not to do. As we learn something, it unlocks new question for us to improve; and the cycle goes on until we satisfy ourselves and others on our makes.
Then we had the Connected Learning Web activity led by Mozilla Rep Tina Verbo. The activity gave the attendees to experience what is Connected Learning all about: we should be interested in what we are learning; learning should be social, in a way that we teach and learn from our colleagues; and last connected learning recognize the importance of academic success and intellectual growth.
For the second part of the Maker Party, I made a demonstration of the Webmaker Tools, and explained how each tool helps in teaching and promoting Web Literacy. Participants then had an activity to collaborate in exploring each Webmaker tool. Most of the groups used the Appmaker tool — an awesome tool used to create cool app even you don’t know how to code. At the end of the collaboration activity, we had a recap of the activities they participated in and the Webmaker project itself. Some of the attendees presented their works and in turn were given free Mozilla shirts! The result was awesome, in such little time given, they created awesome makes!
