FSA Maker Party Training

In celebration of the Maker Party season, the Mozilla Philippines Community organized a Maker Party for Firefox Student Ambassadors, where attendees deepened their understanding about the Webmaker Project and organizing their own Maker Party sessions. In this event, we focused on activities related to the Webmaker principles, Webmaker tools, and teaching the Web. This Maker Party training session happened at the Mozilla Community Space Manila and was attended by a lot of awesome Firefox Student Ambassador (FSA) club leads.

The training session started with an informative discussion about the Webmaker Project. First activity was the Collaborative Mind Mapping: attendees were divided into three groups and each group was given a Webmaker core idea to serve as keywords for the mind mapping. To make the activity more fun, time was limited; groups will swap papers with other group for them to continue the mind mapping. After the fun mind mapping activity, we handpicked three FSA’s to explain what they wrote in each keyword. Capping off the activity, we discussed and related their answers to the Webmaker principles or core ideas: Making is learning, Connected learning, and Open Web.

After learning the ideas behind the Webmaker Project, we had a discussion about the Webmaker tools and how they help learners to learn the basic web technologies and have a deeper understanding about web literacy.

For the attendees to experience how these tools actually work, we had an activity called Collaborative Exploration to let them explore the Webmaker tools by collaboratively creating something awesome. After the activity, participants were asked to showcase their makes with just a little time and cool idea. The attendees created something awesome with the help of these Webmaker tools: Thimble, Popcorn Maker, X-ray Goggles, and Appmaker.

Teaching basic web technologies and promoting web literacy is the main goal of the Webmaker Project, and to empower the attendees on how they can teach or share their knowledge to others, we discuss to them the Teaching kits, after the discussion and presenting some examples, we let each group to prototype the things they want to teach using the Teaching Kit Canvas. After a given time, we did another activity, which is to convert their canvas to online teaching kits; and now they can teach online. To give the attendees to the idea to teach offline or create an event to collaborate with others using Webmaker; We introduce to them the Maker Party, and give them the tips and guides to organize one.
