Protecting the Open Web and its users is one of the top priority of Mozilla. That’s why Mozilla keeps on fighting large corporations who monopolize the Web and violates the rights of its users. Online privacy is one of those rights, Mozilla can’t fight and build a better Web alone. We, the Web users are also responsible for fighting for our rights. Remember that we are the owner of the Web and its our responsibility to protect it and make it better.
In the Philippines, online privacy is not concerned as a pressing concern. So, when we were invited by our friends at Mozilla India to join the #privacymonth campaign, we immediately hopped on and planned how we can launch this campaign locally!
For the whole month of January we did a lot of activities online and offline campaigns for the #privacymonth. Here’s a summary on what we had been up to for the past month!
Social Media Campaign
- Hugot Lines
We want to launch the campaign in a high note and to do that we have to think of something that will appeal greatly to our target audience— Filipino netizens who are mostly millennials using the Internet on a daily basis. What’s the better way to attract the attention of Filipino netizens on a seemingly technical topic than using hugot lines to show the relevance of online privacy?
Perhaps this is our favorite campaign stint as in just 2 hours on a lazy Sunday morning (not to mention on the last day of the long holiday), it spread like wildfire and everyone find it so fun and easy to compose their own hugot lines.
- Change the social media display photo and cover photo
After our soft launch (that made a lot of buzz) we officially launched later that evening by changing our profile pictures and cover photos to the #privacymonth theme. Thanks to Mozillians Trishul Goel and Shahbaz Alam for the profile picture generator!
- International Privacy Day Call to Action
Everyone loves a meme, much more if it is witty and is line with a big event that trended in the Philippines. Hence, we used this Miss Universe meme where Miss Bulgaria is seen encouraging Miss Philippines to take the crown and use it as an analogy for encouraging your friend to update your software in line with the International Data Privacy Day last January 28!
Web users who have updated their software, shared this badge:
- Localized Privacy Tips
We also posted privacy tips in different Philippine dialect on our social media accounts. Thanks to the daily privacy tips from the Privacy Month Task Force!

Offline Campaign
- Encouraged Mozilla Club and Firefox Student Ambassadors to teach about privacy
FSA and Mozilla Clubs in the Philippines played a huge role in our #privacymonth, with some of them organizing events to increase the awareness of their campus or community about online privacy.

- Online Privacy and Chill
We also had sessions at MozSpaceMNL, one of which is called ‘Online Privacy and Chill’ (in reference to the launch of Netflix in the Philippines) where we talked about the basics of online privacy and watched documentaries for us to better understand the topic.

Another event at MozSpaceMNL was the #TrainTheTrainers event where we taught people interested to spread the word about online privacy the importance of it, how they can protect themselves and how they can teach others using the resources that we have at Mozilla.

Overall, it was the most fun, informative and thought-provoking campaign that we have run at MozPH so far! This is just our first step in making the Philippines more privacy-aware and we will continue to #advocate4privacy!
Thanks to all who participated on the Philippine Privacy Month campaign! Big thanks to Mayur Patil and friends at the Privacy Month task force who explained to us everything that we need to know about online privacy and this campaign!
