Mozilla’s mission is to ensure the Internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all. An Internet that truly puts people first, where individuals can shape their own experience and are empowered, safe and independent. Mozilla is a global community of technologists, thinkers, and builders working together to keep the Internet alive and accessible, so people worldwide can be informed contributors and creators of the Web. As an organization, we believe this act of human collaboration across an open platform is essential to individual growth and our collective future.
With the guiding principles of our mission, the leadership of the Mozilla Philippines Community (MozillaPH) shows their support on calls to pass the Open Access in Data Transmission Bill (the proposed Open Access in Data Transmission Act filed by Cong. Victor Yap, House Bill Number 57; and Senator Ralph Recto, Senate Bill Number 45), which aim at establishing a forward-looking and future-ready digital policy framework for the Philippines.
It is hoped that with the passing of both bills in the House of Congress and Senate, the country’s data transmission industry will be brought to the Digital Age by adopting the basic principles of how Internet works: in a decentralized and distributed manner.
We encourage all Pinoy Mozillians to sign the online petition via [https://www.change.org/p/better-internet-access-pass-open-access-in-data-transmission-bill-futureproofph-betterinternetph-phinternet].
We also call on the leadership of Project BASS, which was mentioned in the petition, to make their software open source, as well as data obtained from the general public be made available for everyone to utilize and appreciate. By doing so, citizens who share and contribute their data will be assured of how their information is properly safeguarded and ensured that speed test results are impartial; setting aside the possibility of commercializing the data collected.
Maraming salamat po!
