MozillaPH Raises Concerns over DICT’s “Project: SIM Check Mo” | Urges Protection of Privacy Rights
The Mozilla Philippines Community (MozillaPH), the local arm of the global non-profit organization Mozilla, expresses serious concerns regarding the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) plan to allow anyone to access the initials of the owner of a duly registered SIM Cards through “Project: SIM Check Mo.”
Dedicated to promoting openness, innovation, and privacy on the Internet, MozillaPH sees “Project: SIM Check Mo” as a significant threat to individuals’ privacy that could lead to enabling unrestricted access to individuals’ private information. The proposed project may expose innocent users to potential harm and danger from cybercriminals seeking to exploit this data. Such unrestricted access can lead to unauthorized verification of SIM Card ownership, opening the door to stalking, harassment, and other malicious activities directed at private individuals.
MozillaPH firmly believes in the fundamental right to privacy, which is crucial for maintaining a safe and secure online environment. Our mission is centered around empowering individuals to protect their privacy and control their data.
We strongly urge the DICT to reconsider “Project: SIM Check Mo” and take immediate steps to safeguard the people’s right to privacy.
We also call upon the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to actively enforce the provisions of the RA 10173 (Data Privacy Act of 2012). It is essential that the commission takes a firm stance in protecting citizens’ personal information and ensures that robust measures are in place to prevent any misuse or unauthorized access to sensitive data.
MozillaPH stands ready to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including the DICT and the NPC, to find alternative solutions that prioritize user privacy while addressing legitimate concerns related to SIM Card registration. Together, we can work towards a more secure and privacy-respecting digital ecosystem that benefits all individuals in the Philippines.
